Mayfield, Ky.–The Graves Co. Sheriff’s Office has released details of Tuesday night’s capture of an escaped inmate in Mayfield by deputies and the U.S. Marshals. The capture resulted in two other arrests, one for hindering prosecution and the other for bail jumping.
Darius Harrison, age 26, was captured last night after escaping from the jail October 5. He was incarcerated in April after the Easter armed robbery of a convenience store.
Since the escape, Graves Co. Sheriff’s Office detectives have been working in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service and McCracken County Sheriff’s Office detectives to try to locate Harrison.
Sheriff Jon Hayden said a series of surveillance operations have been conducted over the past few days, which ultimately led to the capture of Harrison at a residence located on Clayshire Court in Mayfield Tuesday evening at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Sheriff Jon Hayden, Detective Brooke Amberg, Sgt. Richard Edwards and Capt. Jeremy Prince participated in the arrest and they were assisted by Deputy U.S. Marshals and detectives from the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office.
Michale Payton, age 35, to whom the residence belonged, was located at the residence and initially denied that Harrison was inside. As the residence was being searched, Harrison was found and surrendered peacefully. The investigation revealed that Harrison had been hiding at Payton’s residence since the escape, with Payton’s knowledge and consent.
Payton was arrested for Hindering Prosecution or Apprehension 2nd Degree.
Harrison was arrested and charged with second degree escape.
Another fugitive was also found at the home: Cordell Cody, age 26, of Mayfield, wanted on an outstanding Graves County arrest warrant for Bail Jumping 2nd Degree.
All three suspects were transported to the Graves County Sheriff’s Office, processed, interviewed and then lodged in the Graves County Jail.
The Mayfield Police Department also assisted with the investigation.
