Oakland, Tenn.–A rural Henry County home was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon after a propane leak.
The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 780 Booth McSwain Road and found the structure partially engulfed, but the fire spread too quickly to save the house, according to Fire Chief James Martin.
The property is owned by Pete Mitchell, who was able to get out of the house safely.
Martin said, “Once the roof collapsed all we could do was keep it from spreading to the adjoining woods. The biggest challenge was the basement as we could not enter due to the roof collapse and partial floor collapse.”
Mutual aid was provided by the Paris Fire Dept and the Springville Volunteer Fire Department. Oakland responded with three trucks and six firefighters, Springville sent two trucks and five firefighters and City of Paris sent one truck with 2 firefighters.
EMS was also on scene as a precaution, Martin said, “but luckily were not needed.”
Firefighters were on the scene until 8 p.m.
