New Language Arts Curriculum Showcases Creativity At Union City Elementary

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director
Union City, Tenn.–Students in Clarissa Youngblood’s Advanced 3rd-grade ELA (English Language Arts) class were extra-proud of their work recently.
And it showed.
After reading “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” outside of class, students were introduced to story elements in class via the new CKLA curriculum at UCES. They were then assigned to put together a Labbook Book Report for presentation for their classmates.
The Kate DiCamillo novel contains several themes involving loss and recovery, kindness and compassion, and the journey to self-discovery.
“They (they students) worked really hard and were excited about having the opportunity to have their work displayed,” Youngblood said.

The first project of the school year in Ashleigh Roberson’s 4th-grade Advanced Social Studies class was all about family.
After wrapping up a study period of the Middle Ages, students were challenged to design their own Coat of Arms in the CKLA program.
The designs included both colors and lines that represented their individual families, their histories and their family beliefs.
Students presented their COAs with oral reports for classmates to conclude the project.
