No Indictments Issued In Two High Profile Obion Co. Cases

Union City, Tenn.—The Obion County Grand Jury Tuesday declined to issue indictments in two high-profile cases.
The grand jury declined to indict members of the Obion County Sheriff’s Office and/or Union City Police Department in a case involving the death of an inmate in March. And, the grand jury returned a ‘no true bill’ in the case involving former teacher Beth McManus, who had been charged with three counts of statutory rape involving an authority figure.
Inmate Sterling Higgins died in police custody at the age of 37. According to the information released to the media at the time, Higgins died while being booked into the Obion County Jail after he allegedly was uncooperative and assaulted staff members and was subdued by officers.
In the McManus case, the former teacher was arrested by the Obion Co. Sheriff’s Office in June on charges alleging statutory rape of a former student in 2012.
