MSU Instructor Recognized By Japanese Consulate

Murray, Ky.–Murray State University senior instructor of Japanese Yoko Hatakeyama has been recognized by the Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville for her contributions toward building Japanese and American relations.

Hatakeyama received a formal commendation from Consul-General Hiroyuki Kobayashi during the Japan/America Society of Kentucky’s Japan Festival held Sept. 21 in Lexington, Kentucky. The award honors individuals and/or organizations within the Consulate-General’s jurisdiction (Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana) for their work in uniting Japanese and American cultures.

Hatakeyama was recognized for her work as a language professor, her advocacy for international student exchanges with Japan and her support of the Consulate-General. That includes her backing of the Consulate-General’s Japan Exchange and Teaching Program and involvement with cultural initiatives; last year, Murray State hosted Japanese ninja Tomonosuke for a live demonstration.

“I am deeply moved to receive this honor,” Hatakeyama said. “The award is not only for me, but also for my students. I am especially proud of my students who have achieved their goals and have been bridging the two different cultures of Japan and the U.S. through their professions, both in the U.S. and Japan. I am very grateful for the support that I have received from the University community and the Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville.”

“Murray State University is indebted to Professor Hatakeyama for her dedication to our students,” said College of Humanities and Fine Arts Dean Dr. David Balthrop. “Yoko has moved many students from the classroom to the experiential phase of their education and beyond with her connections, dedication and her never-ending sense of duty and energy. The Department of Global Languages and Theatre Arts and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts are proud to support Yoko in all of her success to endorse international study, travel, and job placements for our students.”
