Extreme Heat, Winds and Dry Conditions Make Field Fire Difficult To Contain

Buchanan, Tenn.–The Paris Landing Fire Department, along with the State Forestry Service and Henry County Sheriff’s deputies, were dispatched to 4460 Buchanan Road on a report of a field on fire at 1 p.m. Monday.
Fire Chief Reggie Coles said, “Arriving units found a recently harvested soybean field fully engulfed in flames and quickly spreading into the woods threatening two houses and a hunting cabin.”
The high heat and extremely dry conditions, along with rapidly changing winds made the fire difficult to contain and extinguish, Coles said.
“With a combined effort of all agencies including the landowner who used his own bulldozer, the fire was contained and extinguished with no injuries or property damage,” Coles said.
Property Owner Jim Bradshaw said he was burning a stump near the soybean field and had left the fire unattended briefly. When he returned the fire had spread to the soybean field.  Mutual aid was received from Paris Fire Dept who sent their brush truck and two personnel.  Paris Landing had three trucks and 10 personnel on the scene for two hours.  Forestry Service responded with two trucks and twp personnel.
Colessaid, “Paris Landing Fire Dept would like to remind everyone to exercise extreme caution with any open burning due to the current extreme heat and dry conditions.  And also be aware that Burn Permits are currently required for open burning and may be obtained by calling the Forestry Service at 642-3808 or online at www.burnsafetn.org.”
