Jason Qualls set a goal of at least a third-place finish for the Union City High School boys’ golf team heading into the District 14 Small Division Tournament.
The Tornadoes did that – and one spot better.
UC placed runner-up to Gibson County at Persimmon Hills in Sharon Monday, earning the Purple and Gold a spot in the team portion of the Region 7 tourney next Monday at the Milan Country Club.
The Twisters trailed only GC – that by two strokes – after shooting 340 over the 18-hole competition.
Carter Walton fired a 78 and placed fourth on the individual leader board to earn a medal. Walton was tied for third at the end of regulation, but dropped to fourth after a four-hole playoff.
Joyner Caldwell, the lone senior on Union City’s team, finished fifth and medaled individually after breaking a tie for the spot by winning a playoff on the first extra hole. Caldwell shot an 80 in regulation.
Other scores for the Tornadoes included: Nolan Chandler (87) and Landon Hauhe (95). Mason Reed came in with a 99 and Gabriel Qualls shot 107.
There were five full teams and 37 individuals in all to compete in the tourney.
“I told the kids when they were on the driving range (before the match) that our goal was third-place because that would get us into the regional tournament,” Qualls said. “Anything above that, I thought, would be a bonus.
“And second-place was a really nice bonus.”
Qualls praised the play of his entire squad, but especially Walton, Caldwell and Chandler.
“Those three all played really well and had scores better than what they’d averaged in the regular season,” the UC coach continued. “They stayed composed and never rattled when they got in trouble on the course.
“And if they do that again Monday, they’ll give themselves a chance to get a berth in the state tournament.”
The Small Division State Tournament is set for Oct. 8 and 9 at WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester.
The girls’ district tournament is slated for today, beginning at 9 a.m.
