Cross Creeks Refuge Closed Today For Spraying

Dover, Tenn.–All of Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge in Dover will be closed today (Monday, September 23) due to aerial spraying of herbicides.
Refuge officials said, “We regret the inconvenience to our visitors on that day, however it is necessary for effective management. The refuge is in constant battle with invasive exotic wetland plants that if left unchecked will clog waterways and not allow the food to grow that our wintering waterfowl rely on during migration. These plants are spread through high water and floods. The only effective tool against these plants for control is water safe herbicides. The most efficient way to get to all major infected areas is to spray aerially.”
