UCES Grandparents' Day Draws Smiles Aplenty

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–The more, the merrier. Union City Elementary School principal David Byars estimated “around 1,000” people visited campus the last two days to enjoy and partake in Grandparents Day festivities.

And by all accounts, everyone enjoyed a truly “grand” time.

Family members watched students in pre-K through the fourth grade perform songs under the direction of music teacher Katie Tohn and then enjoyed refreshments and took advantage of multiple picture-taking opportunities.

Morning sessions were held both Tuesday and today in the school’s courtyard, with the afternoon visitations moved inside to the school library due to the heat and high humidity.

Byars and assistant principal Thel Taylor welcomed guests, while members of the UCES faculty and staff served refreshments to all in attendance.

School officials also provided shuttle transportation for many from the parking areas to the school, due to the large turnout.

“I’ve never seen so many smiles and happy faces,” Byars said. “We were so glad to show off our beautiful campus, including our courtyard and library.

“I think it’s safe to say Grandparents Day was a big hit at Union City Schools.”

This marks the sixth year UCES has commemorated Grandparents Day.
