Graves County, Ky.–A flagger in a construction zone on a highway in southern Graves County was struck Thursday morning and transported to a Paducah hospital for treatment of her injuries. Jennifer Burks, age 53, of Eddyville, was flagging vehicles in the construction zone and was transported to Baptist Health of Paducah.
Graves County Sheriff’s Deputies Dale Mason and Zac Smith were dispatched to KY 339 West at Central Road in the southern part of the county at 6:48 a.m.
According to the press release, preliminary investigation shows that Ethan Barnett, age 17, was eastbound and drove up on a marked construction zone as Smith Contracting was paving the roadway.
Deputies said several contributing factors led up to the collision which included direction of travel, limited visibility, glare from the sun and nature of the roadway.
According to the press release, Barnett swerved to miss a stopped vehicle and struck Burks, who is a flagger for Smith Contracting. Barnett and a passenger were uninjured.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by Mayfield-Graves County EMS, Smith Contracting Crew and Good Samaritans.
