UTM Offers Photography, Language Classes For Community

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin has space available in community classes for digital photography, Korean language and culture, and sign language this fall. All courses are enrolling now, and seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
 
Those interested in learning about the Korean language and culture can enroll in a class held Mondays, Sept. 9-Dec. 9. The beginners’ course will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m., the intermediate level will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and the advanced level will meet from 7:30-8:30 p.m. The registration fee is $30 per person and includes all handbooks and a textbook. Students will focus on the Korean alphabet and basic conversational skills. They will also have the opportunity to attend the annual Korean New Year party and Kimchi Festival.
 
A course in digital photography will be held from 6-9 p.m., Mondays, Sept. 9-Oct. 21. This class, taught by local photographer Dr. Tom Gallien, will focus on basic camera functions and photographic composition. This class was previously two separate courses that have now been combined. The registration fee is $145 per person. There will be no class Oct. 14 while UT Martin is on fall break.
 
Beginning Sign Language I will be held from 1-3 p.m., Saturdays, Sept. 14-28. The registration fee is $45 per person, and both teenagers and adults are welcome. The course is designed to introduce basic sign language vocabulary and the numbers one through 20. Students will learn more than 100 simple signs, including how to introduce themselves. The course will also cover differences between the Signed Exact English, signed English and American Sign Language dialects. Beginning Sign Language II will be offered in November as a follow-up course with another level III course offered in the spring.
 
Beginning Sign Language III will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m., Saturdays, Sept. 14-28, as a continuation of the level I and II courses. The registration fee is $45 per person, and both teenagers and adults are welcome. The course will review signs learned in the previous two courses and introduce more than 100 new signs, including numbers greater than 100. Students will also be introduced to signing ordinal numbers and repeating pronouns, develop expressive and receptive skills, and continue to learn about deaf culture.
