McKenzie, Tenn. – Bethel President Walter Butler has announced that McKenzie student Jack Surber is the 2019-2020 Hutchins Scholar Award winner. The recipient is granted full tuition for each semester of his or her senior year and $500.
The Hutchins Scholar Award was established by Bethel in 1976 to honor the generosity and Christian ideals of George & Lottie Mae Hutchins of Marshall, Texas. The award is presented each year to the rising Bethel senior who has met the criteria and characteristics established including achieving the highest academic average, a belief in Christ, an outstanding mind, a tremendous work ethic, devotion to family, and service to others.
In establishing this $375,000 endowed trust fund, Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins said:
“Our supreme interest in life has been religious and humanitarian. We have regarded such advantages, opportunities, and possessions as were ours as a trust from God, to be administered in a spirit of responsibility and helpfulness…We wish for this instrument to speak for God, for Jesus Christ, and for the cause of Christianity, which we have sought to serve in sincerity and truth. Because He has done so much for us and through us, we wish to live on in His service herein below long after our spirit has gone to dwell with Him forever.”
Surber is a member of the Bethel University baseball team, a representative for the Association of Student Athletes, and a member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in McKenzie, Tennessee. Jack is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Surber.
Dr. Cindy Mallard, Vice President of the College of Arts and Sciences, said, “Mr. Surber began his college career at Bethel University while attending McKenzie High School through our Dual Enrollment program. We are honored that he chose Bethel to further both his academic and his career goals. With a balanced approach to academic studies and extracurricular activities, it is evident that Mr. Surber is not only an excellent student but a multitalented individual. I sincerely look forward to hearing about his future successes at Bethel and beyond. “
