Union City, Tenn.–There will be plenty going on along with the football game Friday night when Union City opens its home schedule at War Memorial Stadium against Martin Luther King High School of Memphis.
In addition to a UC Middle School PTO Tailgate prior to kickoff and Hall of Honors ceremonies at halftime of the game, the contest has been dubbed “First Responders Night” by UCHS school officials.
All First Responders (police, fire, ambulance, Air Evac personnel) will be admitted free to the game at the pass gate with proper identification or if they are in uniform.
“It’s just a way for us to acknowledge and show our appreciation to the folks who take care of us and our needs every day,” Tornado head coach Darren Bowling said. “Sometimes we forget to say ‘thank you’ to those who protect and serve, but this is our way to tell them how much we value them and their services.”
The theme night is the first of several this season for Union City home football games, according to Athletic Director Shane Sisco.
Sept. 6 has been designated as “Black-Out Night,” and will acknowledge the stand against terrorism as well as the remembrance of 9/11 and the victims of that tragedy. UC will wear its black jerseys to commemorate the festivities.
The Tornadoes will celebrate homecoming on Sept. 13 against Booker T. Washington. Plans are for the team to either wear gold jerseys or throwback jerseys from years back in the game.
Oct. 4 is reserved for “Camo Night,” with all military personnel honored with free admission if they present identification and/or uniform dress. The Twisters will wear their camouflage jerseys for the occasion.
On Oct. 11, the annual “Breast Cancer Awareness Night” will mark the fight against the disease and will see Union City wear pink jerseys. The contest will also serve as Senior Night, with all fall sports senior athletes honored in ceremonies in the regular season home finale.
All UCHS home games will kick off at 7 p.m.
