Union City, Tenn.–The Union City Middle School football team was impressive in its first game of the 2019 season Thursday, beating University School of Jackson 36-18.
The Tornadoes jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and were up 22-6 at the half and firmly in control after three periods with a 30-6 lead.
Tayehari Jones ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns, hitting paydirt on scampers of 30, 65 and 15 yards.
Jacob Arnold was impressive with his hard-nosed running, accumulating 100 yards and accounting for three two-point conversions.
Quarterback Keaton Brown added a one-yard sneak for a TD, and Kweli Purifoy accounted for UC’s other score with a 25-yard run to the endzone.
Defensively, Jordan Cannon recorded a team-high five tackles, while Copeland Chism was in on three stops. Ben Wade snagged an interception.
UCMS will participate – along with the high school squad – in a jamboree at Milan tonight before resuming regular season action next Thursday at home against Dyersburg.

To include football, band, cheerleaders
Union City will participate in a true “program” jamboree tonight at Milan.
The Tornado middle school and high school football programs, along with the UCHS marching band and cheerleaders, will all be a part of a full night of preseason football in what is the final dress rehearsal before the 2019 season begins.
The middle school and junior varsity high school football teams will play Milan in two eight-minute quarters, with the high school Tornadoes and Bulldogs matching up in two 12-minute quarters to end the session.
Both the UC and Milan bands will perform during an intermission period.
Action is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Johnnie Hale Stadium.
