Tornado Pride Means Students On Same Team

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Students at Union City Middle School are all on the same team.

And they have the T-shirts to show it.

UCMS kicked off its Tornado P.R.I.D.E  positive behavior program on the second day of classes recently and all students wore gray shirts with a gold interlocked UC that were donated by several businesses and individuals in the community.

The program is part of the Response To Instruction (RTI) and Intervention-Behavior (RTI2-B) initiative. It is a school-wide approach to teaching, modeling, recognizing and supporting positive behaviors at Union City Schools.

The program focuses on building a school environment in which all students can learn and achieve their personal best.

When behavior problems occur, the RTI2-B program offers a framework to respond with appropriate support systems that are aimed at helping students build the social and behavior skills that will make them successful in school and the community.

RTI2-B is research validated and uses evidenced-based interventions to support students, staff and families in their effort to create a school environment focused on learning.

Tornado P.R.I.D.E. was chosen as the slogan/acronym to help students remember the expectations of the program.

They are:

P – Prepared
R – Respect
I – Integrity
D – Dependable
E – Ensure safety

Numerous rewards for good and appropriate behavior and reactions are part of the program, including Twister tickets used in weekly drawings, bi-monthly special activities and participation in the nine-week Tornado Pride assembly.

Assistant principal Allison Palmer and faculty met with students in each grade, outlining the Tornado P.R.I.D.E. program and explaining the acronym and expectations of all involved.

“To show their Tornado P.R.I.D.E. means that students will know exactly what is expected of them,” Mrs. Palmer said. “Teachers and staff have spent time teaching expectations for our building and getting students acclimated to a new school year.

“Students who take the responsibility to show their P.R.I.D.E will be recognized and rewarded in a variety of ways.”

The Tennessee Behavior Supports Project (TBSP) is funded by the Tennessee Department of Education and consists of three regional support contracts: Vanderbilt University, University of Memphis-Lambuth and the University of Tennessee.

Among the list of generous community sponsors for the program are Wal-Mart, MTD, Wade Acres LLC, Lanzer Printing and Office Supply, Williams Sausage, Union City Coca-Cola, Alexander Thompson & Arnold (ATA), Herman Jenkins Motors, Jerry Ward Autoplex, CenterPoint, Gray Farming, Union City Rotary Club and Vicki Wilkinson.
