Weakley County Sheriff's Office Reports Scam

Dresden, Tenn.—The Weakley County Sheriff’s Office has learned that a resident of the county sent $7,000 cash through the mail because they were convinced by someone on the phone that deputies would come and arrest them for allowing their Social Security number to be used to launder drug money in Texas.
Captain Randall McGowan said the victim of the scam thought the money was going to the Social Security agency.
McGowan said, “The sheriff’s office reminds people that the Social Security office, IRA and all other government agencies do not call you on the phone. They will send a letter. The sheriff’s office will not arrest someone on a federal warrant. That’s what the U.S. Marshal’s Service does.”
In this case, after learning that someone had been victimized, local investigators served a search warrant on both UPS and the post office in an attempt to stop the letter from being delivered, but it already had been delivered before it was reported to the Weakley County sheriff’s office.
“If someone tells you the sheriff’s office is going to arrest you if you don’t send money, call the sheriff’s office and report it,” McGowan said.
