UC's Edwards Joins Truly Elite Status With 2nd All-State Nod

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–An All-Stater a year ago, Peyton Edwards was already a member of a special fraternity.

Repeating that feat put the Union City High School baseball standout in an even more-elite group.

Edwards —  the ace of the Golden Tornado pitching staff the past two seasons and a recent Freed-Hardeman University signee — has been named to the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Class 1A All State team for the second straight year.

He becomes just the second-ever UCHS baseball player to be named All State in consecutive seasons, joining only David Barnes (1994-95) in that distinguished category.

Edwards, who also was chosen for Tennessee Sports Writers Association All State team last season, was one of just 15 selections for TBCA team this year.

He compiled an 8-1 record with an 0.92 earned run average, striking out 85 and allowing just eight earned runs in 60.1 innings during his senior campaign. UC won 24 games in 2019, dropping an extra-inning heartbreaker to eventual state runner-up Trinity Christian Academy in the regional semifinals.

Edwards was named Pitcher of the Year in District 13A for the second straight year and was also a member of the All Academic team.

“Well-deserved,” Union City head coach Cole McAdams said of Edwards’ latest honor. “The list of people anywhere in any sport who put together back-to-back all state seasons is a very short one.

“He took the ball and accepted the challenge in every big game and was a selfless player and a great teammate. He’ll be the first one to tell you that he had great defense behind him and that contributed greatly to his success. That’s just the kind of kid and player he is.

“I’m really proud of him and all his hard work.”

As a junior, he went 10-0 with an 0.88 ERA, helping the Purple and Gold to its first state tournament in 23 years and to a program-record 36 wins. He won games in the district, regional and state tournaments that season.

All totaled during his decorated prep career, he compiled a sparkling 24-3 record with 216 strikeouts and a 1.67 earned run average.

In August, Edwards will join an FHU program coming off back-to-back 47-win seasons and consecutive appearances in the NAIA World Series.

Both Edwards and teammate Will Hogan received additional accolades following their senior seasons, each being named to the TN Baseball Report All Region team.

Hogan batted .340 with a team-high 29 RBI for the Golden Tornadoes in 2019. He was also named to the All-district, All-district tournament and All-Academic teams.

Tenth-grade southpaw Dalton Bone was cited by the TBR as a member of that organization’s Super Sophomore team.

Bone won four of five decisions with a 3.70 ERA this past spring.
