Paris, Tenn.—A Henry County man and woman were arrested on child abuse charges in two separate incidents this week.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office arrested Melissa Cavey, age 30, of Hidden Acres Rd., and charged her with six counts of child abuse and neglect.
According to the report, Deputy William Whitaker was dispatched to a residence on a welfare check at 1 a.m. Wednesday and found six children home alone. The children, aged 1, 3, 5, 10, 11, and 12, said Cavey was at work and that she wasn’t home often and left the older children to do the cooking and cleaning and to take care of the younger ones. They also told Whitaker that she beat them. Whitaker also noted in the report that he saw bruises on one of the younger children and that the kids slept on the floor because there were no beds.
Another deputy was left at the residence and Whitaker drove to her workplace and arrested her. The report noted that arrangements have been made for the children to stay with someone else and that the DCS is now involved in the case.
Cavey posted bond of $10,000 on Thursday. She was arraigned in General Sessions Court today and her next appearance was set for September 26.
In the other case, Caleb Roe, age 30, of Springville, was arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse. He remains in the Henry Co. Jail on a $50,000 bond.
According to the report, DCS was contacted in the case, too, after abuse to a three-year-old boy was reported. Deputy Cpl. David Andrews said in the report that he noticed bruises on the child and that someone had reported the child had a busted lip after being left with Roe.
The child and other children were taken to the homes of family members.
