Kentucky Officials Meet With Lyon County Sheriff On Needed Highway Improvements

Lyon County, Ky.–Lyon Co. Sheriff Brent White said his office recently met with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Dept. of Highways District 1 Engineer Kyle Poat, and his staff at the courthouse to discuss needed highway safety improvements in Lyon County.
White said, “I am happy to report this was a great meeting which led to timely progress. Thanks to Mr. Poat and his staff for coming to Lyon County and listening to citizen and local government concerns.”
In a press release, Sheriff White listed the concerns that were addressed during the meeting:

“1. Reducing the size of the restricted 45 mph speed zone on US 62 from Park Ave to near Broadway (this moves the west bound zone from near Lakeland Funeral Home closer to Jenkins Road). It still needs to be 45 mph at the intersection with Jenkins due to school traffic and school bus ingress/egress.

2. Posting warning signs and a larger sign at the beginning of this zone so motorists won’t miss this change in the speed limit when west bound.
3. Additional signage at the intersection of US 62 / US 641 / KY 3305 as it relates to yielding traffic in the turn lanes at this stoplight.
4. Requested additional improvements on KY 93 South just south of the KY 293 intersection; specifically to reduce the grade in order to have more line of site visibility at this intersection. KYTC will seek safety funding from Frankfort for this location. Note: this intersection has many RVs, boats, and trailers pulling out from KY 293 and KY 1055 onto KY 93 and we feel any improvement to the line of sight here would prevent more accidents.
5. Requested an extension of the restricted 35 mph speed limit on KY 295 from the I-24 overpass to the Springs subdivision and from Stubbs Road at Hickory Hills subdivision back to Old Kuttawa. KYTC indicated that the remainder of this roadway that loops around to US 62 on both ends may need to be reduced to 45 mph to accommodate this request. This will hopefully improve safety on this congested route and allow for legal golf cart operators (with valid permit) to traverse between Old Kuttawa and Kuttawa more easily and safely.”
White said, “We realize there is more work to be done in other parts of the county. Additional projects we’ve discussed are the turning lanes on US 62 near the Kuttawa businesses by Exit 40. Watch for some improvements coming soon to this location. Improvements on US 62 at Suwanee continue to be studied as well.”
