Benton County, Tenn.—Three handcuffed juveniles escaped in Benton County while being transported from a Memphis Detention Center but were captured thanks to a search involving multiple agencies and K9s from Henry and Benton Counties.
The three juveniles jumped from a van and into the woods at a rest center on 1-40 Friday afternoon.
Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher said the investigation into their escape showed the three took the handcuff keys, too. Christopher said all three already have felonies on their records.
Henry County Sheriff’s Cpl. Stacey Bostwick and his K9 bloodhound Rowdy were involved in the search, along with a bloodhound from Benton County and a bloodhound from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Christopher told WENK/WTPR that the THP helicopter was also involved in the search.
Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew said a man in the area had found a piece of clothing and Bostwick and Rowdy had just initiated a track when a Benton Co. deputy spotted the three.
The search took four hours in the heat and humidity Friday night. The three juveniles were captured at 6:45 p.m. in Holladay after a 911 caller reported seeing them trying to hitchhike along the roadway.
Christopher said, “Both tracking dogs and handlers did a great job” and he thanked the THP for sending several men to aid in the search, too.
