Now Showing At Discovery Park Of America Starship Theater!

UNION CITY, TENN. — Now showing at Discovery Park of America from Giant Screen Films are two stunning films, “Titans of the Ice Age” and “Tornado Alley.” Using the magic of immersive sight and sound technologies, these films provide guests with an inspiring perspective on the world presented on DPA’s giant state-of-the-art screen in the Starship Theater.
“Titans of the Ice Age” is an action-packed immersive portal to the great Pleistocene ice age that includes the story of a female woolly mammoth calf exposed in 2007 by the melting Siberian permafrost. Now part of the collection of the Shemanovskiy Museum and Exhibition Center in Salekhard, Russia, it’s one of the best-preserved mammoth mummies in the world.
“This film is especially relevant for our guests,” noted Jennifer Wildes, DPA’s exhibits director. “Immediately below the theater, we have on display the skeleton of an actual 12,000-year-old woolly mammoth that was found on the bank of the Istra River in Russia. Seeing the film will give our guests a greater level of context as they view our own artifacts from the Pleistocene ice age.”
Narrated by Academy Award® winning actor Christopher Plummer, the giant-screen film transports viewers to the otherworldly frozen landscapes of the northern hemisphere 10,000 years before modern civilization.
“Audiences will experience the world of these prehistoric animals with a realism that only this canvas can provide.” said Andy Wood, producer of the film. “The Pleistocene age has been an incredibly popular subject in commercial films and pop culture over the past decade – kids love mammoths. But the historical accuracy has often been lacking.  “Titans of the Ice Age” presents a veritable depiction of this fascinating epoch, and we are really proud to have worked with a distinguished team of scientists and partners to tell its story.  The end result is a film that is both highly entertaining and revealing.”
“Tornado Alley,” narrated by Bill Paxton, brings nature’s most dramatic weather phenomenon to Union City.
The film follows daring large-format filmmaker Sean Casey, star of the Discovery Channel’s “Storm Chasers” series, and the researchers of the VORTEX2 initiative on a thrilling quest to witness the birth of a tornado from its very heart. Armed with an IMAX® camera, a fleet of customized vehicles designed to withstand gale force winds, torrential rains and unrelenting hail, and an arsenal of the most advanced weather measurement instruments ever created, Casey and the VORTEX2 scientists take audiences on a heart-pounding mission to experience a tornado’s destructive power while gathering the most comprehensive extreme weather data ever collected.
Casey and his crew race after storms in TIV-2, a seven-ton armored “tornado intercept vehicle” engineered and built by Casey to help him capture what he considers a cinematic “holy grail,” a shot of a tornado from point-blank range. “Tornado Alley” is the culmination of Casey’s efforts and will give DPA’s guests the chance to ride along—and to experience a visual powerhouse of never-before-captured tornado footage on the giant screen.
Teacher’s guides for each film are available for download from DPA’s education page.
