"Amphibian Fun & Fairy Houses" Program At Refuge Saturday

Springville, Tenn.–Looking for something to do with your family this Memorial Day weekend, yet is easy on the pocketbook? Come to the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge Center from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25th for a program on “Amphibian Fun and Fairy Houses”.  The Center is located at 1371 Wildlife Drive in Springville. The program is free.

Brittany Smith will give a short, child friendly program on local amphibians, with a short walk to search for specimens along the Nature Discovery Trail.  Participants will get practical experience on where to look for and how to identify a few amphibians in your back yard.  Stay for the fun as everyone constructs “fairy houses” to place outside to attract amphibians for easier viewing.  For those children who wish, we invite them to come dressed as a fairy or an amphibian for the program.

In addition, the refuge will have its popular “Refuge Discovery Backpacks” and activity booklets to check out so kids can earn their Jr. Refuge Manager badges.  Backpacks contain items such as a butterfly net, fish net, binoculars, bug viewers, insect collectors, magnifying glasses and field guides that will help you in your adventures.  Young participants that complete at least six activities will be “sworn in” by staff as official Jr. Refuge Managers receiving a badge and certificate.

Whereas the refuge visitor center is always open Monday – Saturday from 8:00 – 4:00 pm, please note the Amphibian Fun and Fairy House program is only from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. Entry to the event and to the visitor center is free. For more information about this event or the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge please call 731-642-2091.
