Memphis-based discount chain Fred’s announced Thursday it is closing 104 more “underperforming” stores and the new closings include the stores in Union City, Huntingdon, Humboldt, Milan and Savannah.
Those stores will soon begin liquidation sales, just as the stores in Paris, Dyersburg and Murray already are undergoing. The Paris and Murray stores were included in the first round of closures that were announced by Fred’s in April.
One month after announcing it was closing 159 stores in 13 states, Fred’s is closing the additional 104 stores nationwide, and the list includes 15 from the state of Tennessee – five in rural West Tennessee.
Fred’s will have 294 stores remaining.
Discounts during the liquidation sales are expected to range from five percent to 20 percent on most items with some exclusions. The stores are expected to close by the end of May.
The liquidation of the 104 stores starts Thursday with stores expected to close by the end of June. Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia and Tennessee are losing the most locations.
