Art Exhibit Created By Disability Arts Access Program Set

Huntingdon, Tenn.–The artwork created this year by participants in the Disability Arts Access in Rural Tennessee program will be showcased from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at the Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center. It is free and open to the community.
This fun and whimsical event will highlight works in various art modalities by individuals with developmental disabilities.
The art exhibit will take place in the main lobby of The Dixie. The performance and awards ceremony will be held in the Hal Holbrook Theatre. Participants will perform a creative movement dance, a song written and produced by the participants, and show a film highlighting the year’s events.
DAART is a year-long program that focused on teaching participants with disabilities self-advocacy, confidence, and
self-expression skills through the arts, while also training local teaching artists and arts professionals to work with
individuals with disabilities, in order to ensure that those in the local community can create and support
opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This program, funded by a grant from the Tennessee Arts
Commission, and generous support from Bethel University, also allows for student interns to become trained in
evidence-based practices for those with disabilities, while learning to use their talents to teach foundational life
and social skills to the program participants.
