Union City, Tenn.–Chelsea Farmer’s freshman English I Honors students have exceeded even her own lofty expectations.
The Union City High School teacher said she was “blown away” by both the creativity and effort her students gave on an end-of-the-year project on which they first wrote childen’s books, then read them to UC Elementary School second-grade students this morning.
“I’ve done this project several times with classes, but this group has been the best I’ve ever had with what I asked them to do,” Farmer claimed. “Their creativity, especially, has been something I’ve never seen before from a collective class.
“I’m so proud of their efforts.”
Farmer gave her classes roughly six weeks to create the children’s stories in what she called a “community service project.”
Students’ main focus in the assignment was character and plot development for the stories, with both writing and illustrations equally important, the UCHS teacher insisted.
The 18 freshmen in Farmer’s second period class rotated in groups and read to the seven second-grade classes at UCES this morning.
On Friday, fifth-period English I Honors students will repeat the practice at UCES.
