Buchanan, Tenn.–The appearance of the Nina and Pinta Replicas at Paris Landing State Park has been delayed again.
A spokesman for the Captain of the ships told WENK/WTPR Tuesday morning that because the Aberdeen Locks & Dams at Columbus, Mississippi, are being dredged right now, no ships can move through it. “There is no traffic getting through right now,” she said, “and we’re just at the mercy of the locks.”
The Captain is monitoring the situation continually, she said. “We do know that we will be unable to make it on the days we had planned, May 10-May 12. We don’t know yet when we will be able to get there, but we’ll announce it.”
She said, “The ships have had a positive response from the people in the greater Paris Landing State Park area and The Columbus Foundation regrets that the ships will not be able to open in Buchanan this weekend and wishes to thank the citizens and families for their understanding in this matter. The ships do look forward to being open at Paris Landing State Park in the future.”
The Nina was built by hand and without the use of power tools and is considered to be the most historically correct Columbus Replica ever built. The ‘Pinta’ was recently built in Brazil and is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century.
