UC Softball Cruises In Tourney Rout

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Union City made quick work of Greenfield in the opening round of the District 13A softball tournament.

The Lady Tornadoes scored eight times in the first and ended the contest via the mercy rule in the fourth, recording a 15-0 victory over the visiting Lady ‘Jackets at Eddlemon/Hawks Field in Graham Park.

The win was the eighth straight for UC (15-9), the regular season league co-champion and second seed, in the now double-elimination event.

The Twister girls now face No. 3 Bradford, a 13-3 victor over Lake County Wednesday, tonight at 7.  Another triumph would put Union City in Monday’s winners’ bracket final, while a loss today would drop the Purple and Gold to Monday’s elimination losers’ bracket game at 5 p.m.

In other spring sports news involving Union City teams and athletes, the District 14 Small Division individual championships scheduled for Wednesday were washed out and rescheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. at the UC Middle School courts.

The Tornado programs have two teams in the doubles finals and one player in the singles championships – all of whom will advance on to the regionals, regardless of how they fare in the district championships.

Today’s schedule – weather permitting – has the running finals of the 42nd annual Rotary Relays scheduled for 4 p.m. at Dave Shatz Track. All sprints and relay races will be included, with 15 schools involved in the competition.
