UC Teams Shine In Day 1 Of Rotary Relays

Union City, Tenn.–Day 1 of the annual Union City Rotary Relays was a good one for the two host teams.
 
The UC boys rank first and the Tornado girls second among 15 teams after the field events, hurdles and distance races Tuesday afternoon at Dave Shatz Track.
 
The sprints and relay races are scheduled for Thursday in West Tennessee’s longest running track meet.
 
In other spring sports results from Tuesday involving Union City teams and athletes, the high school softball squad won at West Carroll 12-9, while the UC Middle School tennis teams split at Jackson, the girls beating USJ and the boys falling to the Bruins in separate shutouts.
 
Today’s schedule is highlighted by the District 14 Small Division individual tennis championships that involve four Union City doubles teams and a pair of Tornado singles players. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the UCMS courts.
 
Also today, the second-seeded Lady Tornado softball team opens play at home at 4:30 in an elimination game against Greenfield.

UC consistently among top
 
Tornado athletes ranked in the upper echelon of several competitions in the 42nd annual Rotary Relays Tuesday.
 
Union City had two boys score in the shot, three earn points in the triple jump and two tally in the discus. Two more Tornadoes scored in the 3200 run.
 
Justyn Johnson was second (48’02”) and Keyshon Gross (42’05) third in the shot.
 
Jaheim Ceaser (38’02”) was third, Ricky Alexander (35’08”) fourth and Matthew Parr (34’07”) fifth in the triple jump, giving UC a combined 15 points in that event.
 
Taylan Tribble came in second (134’05”) and Neil Brown third (122’10”) in the discus.
 
BJ Frankum netted the Purple and Gold six points with a third-place showing in the 3200 run with a time of 10:53.50. Cedrion Cook was fifth with a time of 11:08.11.
 
Mariah Johnson won the discus with a throw of 95’02” to earn the Lady Tornadoes 10 points. Olivia Dysart was third with a throw of just over 90 feet that netted UC five points and a fourth-place finish.
 
Destiny Kenton was third (29’06”) in the shot put and Kyle McCadney (30’05”) in the girls’ triple jump. Chanyah Liphford placed fourth in the girls’ 300 hurdles with a time of 1:05.18.
 
Briley Coffey gave the Twister girls five points for a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 4’6”.
 
Thursday’s running finals are slated to begin at 4 p.m.
 
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
UC 12, West Carroll 9
 
Tiffanie Oldaker had a monster game, going 4-for-5 with six RBI to help the Lady Twisters close out their regular season with a win at Atwood.
 
Union City, which triumphed Tuesday despite five errors, will enter postseason play today with a 14-9 mark.
 
Oldaker tripled and singled three times on Tuesday for a Tornado club that scored seven times in the second, then held on vs. WC.
 
Sophie Theobald had three hits and three runs scored, and Gracie Laster helped the winning cause with three hits and two runs.
 
Avery Decker crossed the plate twice.
 
Theobald was the winning pitcher with three innings tossed, while Kallie Worrell came on to register the save with a solid final four frames.

The Lady Tornadoes won every match that counted in the official tally, the highlight Molly Kizer’s tie-breaker triumph over Caroline Conder at the No. 2 seed.
 
Shelby Bondurant, Kate Schlager, Mimi Jenkins and Alyssa Durham all had an easier time vs. the Jackson competition.
 
The doubles team of Bondurant and Schlager were tested in a 6-4 win, while Emily Hammond and Allie Tucker had no problem at the No. 2 slot.
 
The UC boys failed to win a match, but were competitive at the No. 1 seed where Ben Wade lost 6-3.
 
Union City’s final match of the spring is slated for Thursday at home against Trinity Christian Academy.
