UCHS Tennis Cruises Into Post Season With Sweeps

Union City, Tenn.–Union City’s two tennis teams barely broke a sweat Friday while tuning up for postseason play.
 
The Tornado squads – even without some of their higher seeded players – swept visiting Gibson County 7-0 at the UC Middle School courts.
 
UC will begin play in the district individual tournament today at home, with team postseason matches scheduled for next week.
 
The UC High School baseball team lost Friday, beaten 14-4 in Jackson by USJ.
 
Today’s spring sports schedule, in addition to the District 14 Small Division Tennis Tournament, includes UC baseball at Trenton and the Tornado soccer team hosting McKenzie.
 
The following is a recap of Friday’s highlights:
 
HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Both Union City squads recorded three shutouts in singles play in easily rolling past Gibson County.
 
Eli Ervin, Conner Terrell and Austin Caldwell all were 8-0 winners on the boys’ side, while Gracyn Callicott, Annie Wade and Emily Fields swept their foes by an identical 8-0 tally.
 
Braxton Burnett, Caroline Conley and Madison Adams won by 8-1 scores.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
USJ 14, UC 4
 
The Tornadoes ran into a buzz saw in Jackson as USJ scored in every inning and sent Union City to a mercy-rule loss.
 
UC (21-7) will wind up its regular season today, playing at Trenton.
 
The top-seeded Tornadoes will host the District 13A Tournament, playing their first game Friday at 5 at Elam Stadium against the winner of Thursday’s game between South Fulton and Dresden. Union City will then play at either 5 p.m. or noon Saturday in the double-elimination event.
 
Against USJ (21-8), the Purple and Gold gave up 14 hits, three walks and made a pair of errors.
 
Will Hogan did homer for UC – just the second of the year for the Tornadoes. Austin Atwill continued his hot hitting with a pair of hits, including a double, while Miles Odle also had a two-base hit.
 
Tyler Walton had two singles and an RBI.
 
Odle (2-4) was chased in the second inning and was charged with the pitching loss. Jaxon Moran tossed three innings of relief.
