UCHS Spanish Students In Building Mode

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Beth McManus’ Spanish classes at Union City High School have been in construction mode recently.

They’ll be involved in demolition soon.

Through separate projects in which students have been digging into cultures of Spanish-speaking countries, McManus’ students have made piñatas (Spanish I) and maracas and burros (Spanish II).

Each class started with a balloon and used paper maché to help build the base for their respective projects. Every detail on the projects represented a cultural facet of the country the student studied.

“I really did not have this planned, but I learned years ago that when students are interested and asking to learn in a way that is fun for them, I’d better listen,” McManus said.

The piñatas will be hanging in her classroom until EOC’s are over.

They will then be taken outside, where the UCHS teacher will show students the proper way to hang a piñata and break it.

McManus said several “very special students” will be asked to join the classes when it’s time to break the piñatas.
