Mayfield, Ky.–A Mayfield man has been arrested in connection with the Easter Sunday armed robbery of a convenience store in Graves County, along with several other charges.
Graves Co. Sheriff Jon Hayden and Detective Brooke Nelms arrested Darius Harrison, age 26. During a search of his home at 179 Greg Street, he was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, cultivating marijuana (over five plants), possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) 2nd Offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also is charged with first degree robbery.
The armed robbery at the Stop and Go Food Mart with the suspect identified as a heavy set black male wearing a very distinctive hoodie and bandana partially covering his face. The suspect entered the store, threatened to shoot the clerk demanding money.
The suspect fled the area on foot. Graves Sheriff’s deputies responded as well as the Kentucky State Police. The first sheriff’s deputy to arrive was Sgt. Richard Edwards. His response time to the store was less than 2 minutes.
Surveillance footage of the suspect from the stores surveillance system was recovered, as well as additional evidence. K-9 Units from both the Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office and Calloway County Sheriff’s Office sent K-9’s to the scene to assist with a track. The track yielded some additional evidence, including evidence that the suspect most likely had a vehicle parked nearby.
The following evening Monday April 22, Graves Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Sharon Church Road and Ash Drive. Once there, they spoke to some area residents that had been walking and noticed some articles of clothing that had been discarded in some tall grass and weeds. The clothing included a very distinctive hoodie and bandana. They recognized these articles of clothing from the local news reports of the armed robbery, as well as photo placed on the department’s Facebook page and news websites, including WENK/WTPR. This area is some 15 miles from the scene of the armed robbery.
A residence nearby and within a few hundred yards of where the clothing was found was identified as being a home where an individual that fit the same basic description lived. Deputies also learned that the man living at this home on Greg Street had been seen pulling into that residence during the time frame of the robbery.
On Tuesday April 24, at around 1:30PM, Det. Brooke Nelms and Sheriff Jon Hayden went to this residence located at 179 Greg Street to further investigate. While at the residence, they located a man hiding in a back bedroom. He was identified as Harrison. Harrison was found to have a quantity of cocaine on his person. An indoor marijuana growing operation was found located in another bedroom of the home. Several marijuana plants were recovered that were a few feet tall, with grow lights, chemicals, and other related items.
Darius Harrison is a convicted felon for burglary, drug and other convictions. Two firearms were located at this residence during the investigation. One of which was a .380 caliber semi automatic pistol that had been reported as stolen from McCracken County in January 2017.
Additional evidence was also obtained that implicates Harrison in the armed robbery Sunday evening.
A female that was located at this residence was identified as being 26 year old Colleen Miller, who was arrested on drug charges.
Both of these suspects were arrested and taken to the Graves County jail.
Two small children were found in the home and were placed into the custody of a family member.
