House Fire Victim's Name Released; More Details Reported

Henry, Tenn.–The name of the man who died from injuries suffered in Thursday’s house fire near Henry has been released.
Henry County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Damon Lowe said the victim was Steven E. Travers, age 53. He said Travers had been staying at the residence at 8518 Hwy. 79 South for the past seven months, but his driver’s license shows his address as 1005 Crane Brook Way Peabody, Massachusetts.
Lowe said at this time his death is believed to be due to smoke inhalation. Travers was unconscious upon arrival by first responders. Travers died at the Henry County Medical Center.
Henry Volunteer Firefighters provided more details of the fire on their Facebook page. After a brief interview with a resident of the home, it was determined that multiple victims could still be in the home even as the fire was still blazing.
“As our interior attack team made their way to the rear of the structure, another occupant of the home had came running out of the house covered in smoke yelling that there was still someone in the home,” firefighters said. “Within minutes our team (with the help of that occupant) managed to pull the victim to safety. Our team immediately started life saving measures on the victim and requested EMS to respond.”
Five people were reported in the home at the time of the fire. The sheriff’s office, fire departments and other emergency personnel were called to the fire at 11:36 a.m. Upon arrival, the home was fully engulfed in flames. The home belongs to Walter Steve Bowden, but Bowden was not at home at the time of the fire.

An autopsy will be performed and the fire is still under investigation by Tennessee State Bomb and Arson and Henry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.
