Paris, Tenn.—The Paris-Henry County Landfill’s annual Free Dump Day, which normally is held this weekend, will not be held this year.
Paris City Manager Kim Foster said most people don’t realize until they get to the landfill that free dumping only applies to the landfill, not the transfer station.
“The only things that can go in the landfill are brush, debris, and construction waste, although contractors are excluded,” she said. “So, the benefit to county residents is very minimal. Paris City residents already receive free brush and debris pickup.”
Landfill Superintendent Anthony McElroy said participation over the past few years has been minimal as people realize what the limitations on what is ‘free’ to dump, Foster said.
“We actually make more people mad on free dump day than we make happy, so we decided to forgo it altogether this year,” Foster said.
When the city began offering “free dump day” several years ago, the rules were different at the landfill, she said. “We just hope the public understands.”
The free dump day historically was held the weekend before the World’s Biggest Fish Fry begins.
