Union City, Tenn.—The red light cameras and speed vans will continue to operate in Union City for at least two more years as Union City City Council voted 4-3 to extend the contract with Redflex.
In a Facebook post, Mayor Terry Hailey noted that he, Jim Rippy, and Randy Barnes voted against extending the contract, while the other four members voted to keep the contract. Hailey has been a vocal critic of the cameras—especially the notices that motorists receive in the mail telling them of violations and ordering them to pay.
Haley noted that even with a mixed vote, the council members respect each other’s votes. “Unlike Washington, we respect each other’s votes,” he said. “In Washington, there’s very little respect.”
