Union City, Tenn.–Teacher Abby Cruce reached out to one of her Union City Schools teacher-teammates for an assist. and Hilary Webb was happy to help.
Cruce’s sixth-grade students were recently reading “Chasing Vermeer” — a 2004 children’s art mystery novel — when the UC Middle School teacher had an idea for an art lesson to accompany the book.
Enter Webb, an art teacher at UC High School.
“I wanted to do this art project as a cross curricular lesson to incorporate our novel’s topic with art,” Cruce said. “Art seems to appeal to many students, so I hoped it would give them a stronger connection to our novel.
“With the advanced class, I like to push them to ‘think outside the box’ and ‘consider all perspectives.’ This particular art project that Mrs. Webb taught was a ‘One point perspective.’
“One of our standards is point of view and with argumentative writing where we discuss the author’s perspective. This art project allowed us to dig deeper into these concepts,” she said.
The students also polished their analyzing skills, widened their vocabulary with art words and were encouraged to look for clues in the artwork of novel.
