Charles Alexander Named Discovery Park Artist Showcase Winner

Union City, Tenn. -Musician, artist and Fulton County resident Charles Alexander is the Discovery Park of America’s Artist Showcase Winner for the second quarter of 2019.
Taking up painting after retirement, Alexander has studied with Jennifer Fairbanks and Cleda Curtis-Neal, but considers himself principally self-taught.  His paintings are in many private residences throughout the U.S. and have earned several awards.

Alexander’s paintings will be displayed in the lower level of Discovery Center April 11 through June 30.  The opportunity to attend a reception with the artist and reception to launch the exhibit will be held April 11 in DPA’s Dinosaur Hall.  The reception will begin at 5:30 and the public is invited.

Alexander’s interest are as varied as his paintings.  He became a pilot at an early age and did everything from crop dusting to piloting an air ambulance, and eventually became an airline pilot.  While flying around the country, Alexander continued to pursue another of his great loves in life, music.  His musical career led him from the Grand Ole Opry stage to becoming the winner of Winfield’s National Fingerstyle Guitar championship in 1992.  He recorded three solo albums and has conducted guitar clinics around the country for Taylor Guitars, D’Addario Strings and the Rane Corporation.

While taking a break from the life of a musician on the road, Alexander joined the police force in the Seattle, WA. Area.  He progressed from patrol to detective, eventually introducing computer forensics as a priority for the department.

Upon retirement, Alexander moved back to the family farm in Fulton County and began painting while caring for his aging mother who had painted most of her life.  His work demonstrates a keen attention to detail and frequently exposes his sense of humor in whimsical depictions.  Working in both oil and acrylics, he particularly enjoys painting still life and portraits.

The April 11th reception will showcase the artist’s works and guests will enjoy hearing his story at 6 p.m., followed by a time for questions.  This is one of many opportunities to celebrate the arts at DPA, as the summer music festival, Rhythm on the Rails is set to begin May 2nd and continue on Thursday evenings through June.  Other special weekend celebrations are also planned as well as spectacular temporary exhibits like the current “Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks”, which closes May 5th and the “Hot Wheels: Race to Win” , which will open August 2, 2019.

Discovery Park of America is located at 830 Everett Blvd. in Union City, Tenn. and is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Visit the website at www.discoveryparkofamerica.com for a complete calendar of events.
