Union City, Tenn.–A home-opening softball win, a no-hitter in baseball and a soccer triumph over their county rival made for a good Thursday for spring sports teams in the Union City School System.
BASEBALL
UC 4, Fort Smith 0
Milan 2, UC 1
Tyler Walton fashioned the Tornadoes’ second no-hitter in four days this week, following up a gem by teammate Peyton Edwards with one of his own.
Walton fanned eight and walked four while not allowing the Arkansas team a single safety. He threw 102 pitches, 58 for strikes, in his first mound assignment of the season.
Conner Hurt reached base twice, scored and drove in a run to pace UC offensively while Will Hogan smacked a two-run single in the fifth. Miles Odle had two hits in three trips and Sam Theobald accounted for the Twisters’ other RBI.
An earned Milan run in the fifth of Union City’s second game of the afternoon relegated the Purple and Gold to a split of their first-day action in the Ladd tourney.
Odle threw well for the second straight outing, but got little offensive support. He struck out seven, walked three and gave just five hits.
The Tornadoes managed just five hits themselves – all singles – by Hurt, Theobald, Dawson Searcy, Austin Atwill and Dalton Bone. Searcy, Theobald and Bone all reached base twice, but Union City stranded eight runners.
UC will take a 6-2 record into tonight’s 7 p.m. game vs. Obion Central at Elam Stadium.
The following details all that, plus a sweep by the UCMS tennis teams in matches played at Halls.
The Union City HS tennis teams dropped a couple of close matches against visiting Graves County, Ky.
SOFTBALL
UC 8, Gleason 3
Everything started at the top for the Lady Tornadoes.
Union City’s first three batters – Avery Decker, Sophie Theobald and Tiffanie Oldaker — combined to go 9-for-12 with six runs scored and five RBI to lead UC to victory in its first game played at Hawks-Eddlemon Field this spring.
The trio all had three hits in four trips to the plate, Decker scoring three times and Theobald homering and driving in three runs.
Halle Riley also had a pair of base knocks for the Twisters, who pounded out 12 hits in all.
Kallie Worrell pitched five innings and struck out six to pick up her second win of the season, while Theobald got the final six outs – four via strikeout.
Now 3-1 overall and winners of three straight, UC will play twice Friday at Martin in the Princess Warrior Classic – against Crockett County at 4:30, and vs. host Westview at 7 p.m.
PREP SOCCER
UC 5, Obion Central 1
The Tornadoes bounced back from a frustrating loss against Gibson County with a season-high goal output to even their record at 2-2.

Marvin Regaldo scored the Twisters’ final goal, and Brad Coleman was credited with an assist on Arellano’s first tally of the match.
