"Pi" (And "Pie") For Everyone

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director
Union City, Tenn.–Sixth-grade advanced math students at Union City Middle School celebrated “Pi” Day Thursday.
“Pie” was part of the activities too.
Pi – as Jennifer Bruff has taught her students — is the name for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
The first three digits of Pi are 3.14, so “Pi” Day is celebrated annually on March 14th.
And, usually, eating pie is part of that celebration.
Again this year, parents of students made and sent pies for students to measure and eat.
Students practiced their measuring skills to determine circumference and diameter of a variety of round objects in the classroom and prove that if you divide the circumference of any circle by its diameter, the answer is always 3.14.
Students were required to memorize the first 10 digits of Pi, although there are millions of digits, as it never ends.
Lilly Courtright took the assignment to a higher level, memorizing over 40 digits.
