UC Girls Tennis, Baseball Teams See Stellar Opening Days

Union City, Tenn.–Opening Day couldn’t have gone much better for the Union City High School baseball and Lady Tornado tennis teams.
 
The Tornado baseball squard swept Dresden 10-0 and 11-0 in a season-opening doubleheader at Elam Stadium, while the UC girls tennis team knocked off defending district champion Greenfield 4-3.
 
Union City’s softball team came out on the short end of a 5-2 decision at Halls in its first game of the year.
 
The UC Middle School soccer team was a winner, beating Martin 6-1 to improve to 3-0.
 
Today’s spring sports slate involving Union City entries has both the girls and boys tennis teams on the road at Halls, while the high school soccer squad opens its season with a match at Trenton.
 
UC’s track team will host an exhibition developmental meet at War Memorial Stadium.
 
On the middle school level, the baseball Tornadoes will play host to Martin.
 
BASEBALL
UC 10-11, Dresden 0-0
 
Tornado pitching twirled a pair of two-hit shutouts and Union City pounded out 25 hits in the two games combined to get the 2019 campaign off to a sterling start with a pair of mercy-rule triumphs.
 
Peyton Edwards struck out 12 in five innings of Game 1 and combined with Mason Reed to blank the Lions.
 
Conner Hurt fanned 10 in a complete-game effort in the nightcap.
 
Will Hogan had a huge day at the dish, driving in six runs total – three in each game – and collecting four hits in all. Dawson Searcy went 4-for-4 in the opener, while Hurt, Tyler Walton and Austin Atwill all had two hits in Game 1 for the Purple and Gold. Miles Odle drove in a pair of runs.
 
In the second game, Walton went 2-for-3 with three ribbies, Odle had two hits and two RBI and Carson Sinclair knocked in two runs.
 
TENNIS
UC 4, Greenfield 3 (G)
 
The Lady Tornadoes got wins at both the top two singles spots and in each of the doubles matches to get their season off to a grand start by beating last year’s district winner.
 
Meg Kizer beat Sam Stone 8-3, and Gussie Parks blanked Kassidy Harris 8-0. The two had earlier combined to beat Harris and Sophie Box 8-3.
 
UC got another critical win in the No. 2 doubles slot as Sailor Bearden and Zoe Cagle got the best of Stone and Maura Shelton 8-3.

SOFTBALL
Halls 5, UC 2
 
The Lady Tornadoes led 2-0 before host Halls erupted for all of its runs in the fifth – all of those tallies unearned.
 
Sophie Theobald tossed four innings of one-hit ball, striking out four. Kallie Worrell was the tough-luck losing hurler despite none of the runs scored against her being earned.
 
Theobald also had a solo home run in the fourth, while Halle Riley accounted for UC’s other RBI with a hit. Gracie Laster doubled.
 
Union City out-hit Halls 5-3.
 
MS SOCCER
UC 6, Martin 1
 
The Tornadoes continued their impressive early season play, getting a splendid four-goal performance from Isaac Mack to roll over the Chargers.
 
Both Hector Corona and Miguel Sanchez-Cruz had a goal and two assists apiece for Union City. Amari Bonds had six saves in goal for the Twisters.
