Wax Museum Comes To Life At Union City Elementary

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Both history and the entertainment world came alive Monday at Union City Elementary School.

A Wax Museum made up of important worldly characters — presented by Marilyn Gilliam’s third-grade advanced ELA (English language arts) students — both educated and entertained UCES students and parents who visited the exhibit in the school library.

Students were given the assignment of reading a biography, then making a poster of facts about their subject and memorizing that information.

Dressed in costumes from not only that era but also in character, students were stoic until visitors “pushed their button,” then coming to life and presenting their chosen subject.

The exercise also focused on improving students’ public speaking skills, according to Mrs. Gilliam, who has employed the exercise three years now.

Among the many personalities from history were Florence Nightingale, Davy Crockett, Harry Houdini, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Albert Einstein, Johnny Appleseed, Lucille Ball and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Also on “display,” were Betsy Ross, Neil Armstrong, Aubrey Hepburn, Amelia Earhart, Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, J.K. Rowling, Sallie Ride, Jacqueline Kennedy and Dolly Parton.
