Griffey: "Birthright" Citizenship Resolution Hearing Wednesday

Nashville, Tenn.–State Representative Bruce Griffey, (R-Paris) has filed House Joint Resolution 47, calling on the Tennessee General Assembly to support President’s Trump’s efforts to end “birthright” citizenship.  Specifically, the resolution filed by Griffey seeks to “commend the President of the United States, the Honorable Donald J. Trump, for his leadership and foresight and for his proposal to re-establish the original intent, purpose and limits of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution as it pertains to the citizenship of persons born within the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”

Griffey’s resolution is scheduled for hearing Wednesday, March 6, at 12:30 pm before the House Public Service & Employees Subcommittee chaired by Rep. Bob Ramsey.   The hearing will take place in House Hearing Room IV.  Griffey asks that “all Tennesseans who support President Trump and his policies on illegal immigration to contact members of this subcommittee and vocalize their support for this resolution.”
Griffey said, “One benefit currently enjoyed by illegals under present policy is the ability to produce on our soil children, who are automatically deemed U.S. citizens as a result of their parents’ criminal actions.  It is analogous to the “fruit of the poisonous tree” doctrine in the legal world.  As a practicing lawyer for over 38 years, who has studied the Constitution, this is not a correct interpretation of the 14th Amendment.”
“The majority of Tennesseans spoke loud and clear during both the 2016 election and the 2018 mid-term election that they support Trump and his policies.  Our legislature should embrace the will and opinion of the majority of people in our great State and be a leader on the national stage in applauding and standing behind Trump’s efforts to correct a misinterpretation of our Constitution,” Griffey said.
