Wow! Nerve Cells Are Interesting–And Tasty!

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Never have cells been so interesting … and tasty!

A large part of Karyn Hill’s 7th-grade science classes at Union City Middle School is centered around the structure and function of the smallest basic unit of life — the cell.

Because of their microscopic size, Hill always guides her students to constructive ways to study what the eyes cannot see.

Mrs. Hill came up with a project that challenged her students to build a cell, label its parts (organelles) and describe the function of each organelle.

They were given three format options for their project: a 3D model, a poster, or a booklet.

With each student having different interests and abilities, those choices allowed students to be as creative as they liked.

“I am always amazed at the number of students who choose to put the extra time in and create such elaborate projects,” the teacher said, adding that students especially love the edible 3D models.

“We get a large assortment of treats: cakes, cookies, brownies, Jello and even Rice Krispy treats. All are covered in different colors of icing, fondant and candies to represent the different structures.

“It makes for a great day, and a wonderful learning experience!”
