Former Teacher Back In Court

Huntingdon, Tenn.–A former Henry County High School teacher who was convicted of having unlawful sexual contact with students is back in court on charges of violating the terms of the sex offender registration by contacting one of his victims on social media.
Kevin Smothers of Huntingdon was arrested and bound over to the next session of the Carroll County Grand Jury.
In Smothers’ sentencing in Henry County Circuit Court in June of 2016, in addition to the sentence, Smothers was ordered not to have any contact with the victims in the case.
Smothers was originally arrested in 2015 and charged with having unlawful sexual contact with students. As time went on, Smothers was arrested on additional charges involving additional students. Smothers pleaded guilty to three charges of solicitation of a minor and one charge of criminal attempted statutory rape by an authority figure.
In June of 2016, Judge Donald Parish sentenced Smothers to one year each on the solicitation of a minor charges and three years for the criminal attempted statutory rape by an authority figure charge.
Smothers was sentenced to serve as a Range One offender and did not receive a fine on any of the charges. Judge Parish ordered that the sentences be served concurrently.
Judge Parish ordered the sentences suspended and placed Smothers on state probation for six years, ordered that Smothers have no contact with the victims and that he be placed on the sex offender registry.
