Nashville, Tenn.–State Representative Bruce Griffey, R-Paris, is encouraging pro-life advocates to travel to the Capitol Building in Nashville Tuesday and stand in support of the bill, known as the “Fetal Heartbeat Bill” he is co-sponsoring.
Griffey is co-sponsoring the bill–House Bill 77–with Representative Micah Van Huss, and it is set for a hearing before the full Health Committee Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Griffey said, “In essence, the bill prohibits abortions in Tennessee from the point that a fetal heartbeat is detected except in the case of medical emergency to prevent the death of the mother. The bill was assigned initially to the Public Health Subcommittee and placed on the legislative calendar for last Wednesday, Feb. 20. The bill cleared the subcommittee and is set for a hearing before the full Health Committee Tuesday in House Hearing Room 1.”
Representative Griffey, who was endorsed in both his primary and general campaign by Tennessee Right to Life, is encouraging any and all pro-life advocates to come to the Capitol tomorrow and stand in support of the bill. “I anticipate that the forces of Planned Parenthood will be organized tomorrow at the Capitol, and we need as many individuals who support life as created by God to show up tomorrow at the hearing as a sign of strength and solidarity in support of this important pro-life bill.”
There is also another pro-life bill, which Griffey is co-sponsoring – the Human Life Protection Act (HB1029). This bill would ban abortion in Tennessee (with the exception of a medical emergency to prevent the death of the mother) upon the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade or the United States Constitution being amended to allow states to prohibit abortion, whichever occurs first. “I believe that the United States Supreme Court with the new justices appointed by Trump will overturn Roe v. Wade; however, we don’t know when it will happen. The Fetal Heartbeat Bill will have a more immediate impact in protecting the innocent, voiceless unborn. This is why it is critical that this bill makes it to the house floor for a full vote,” Griffey said.
