Ranger-Led Driving Caravan Tour

Dover, Tenn.–Join Fort Donelson national park rangers as they lead a caravan tour throughout the battlefield and the community of Dover to learn about and reflect upon the significant African American experience and contributions to Fort Donelson and the community that followed the battle of 1862.
Participants will visit different significant historic areas in and around the national park and Dover that help tell of the Civil War and the goal of freedom through the perspective of the hundreds of enslaved/freedom-seekers that made their way to post-battle, Union-held Fort Donelson.
These men, women, and children lived, worked, and sought refuge at the Union fort 1862-1865, establishing a fully functioning community. The settlement area of Free State eventually became part of the Town of Dover.
The caravan tour begins at the Fort Donelson NB park visitor center, but the tour will take visitor through the city. Registration is required by contacting the Ranger staff.

The vehicle tour will begin at the parking lot of the Fort Donelson Park Visitor Center (120 Fort Donelson Park Road, Dover).
