Hickman Mayor Declares State Of Emergency

Hickman, Ky.–Hickman City Mayor Heath Carlton has declared a State of Emergency due to a mud slide in the area of Buchanan and Church Streets in Hickman. One unoccupied structure has already received some damage, and other structures in the area could be affected should the subsidence continue.
As WENK/WTPR reported Wednesday, officials are working to contain the mud slide that hit directly behind the Hickman First Methodist Church Life Enrichment Center. The slide is the result of the heavy and continuous rain that has been experienced in our area and the already saturated ground.
According to Mayor Carlton, local personnel will be on scene tomorrow along with engineers to assess the damage and take appropriate measures to ensure public safety.
Other damage has been reported on Terrace Drive in Hickman, and that street has been closed.
Everyone is advised to stay away from these two areas of town. The areas are saturated and eroding from underneath. There is the potential for additional slippage, especially if the predicted rainfall in the next couple of days materializes.
The city of Hickman posted a message on its Facebook page Thursday morning, noting, “Several have asked what they can do to help during this state of Emergency. As we know we have more rain coming in starting tonight through Saturday. Saturday is a chance of severe weather.”
The ONE thing people can do to help during this time, city officials said, is to please take the time to clean out ditches on your property. “That would help the city and county a lot. This would have a huge impact on helping flooding efforts.”
Drone photos of the mudslide were posted on our website today and yesterday.
