Union City, Tenn.–Union City is down, but not out.
The Lady Tornadoes were relegated to fourth place in the District 13A Tournament following a 48-26 loss to Dresden Saturday night, but will still move on to the Region 7A tourney next week.
UC (12-17) will play at either Gibson County or Trinity Christian Academy – both state ranked teams — Thursday in the regional quarterfinals. Another setback then would effectively end the Lady Tornadoes’ season.
The Twister girls lost for a third time in as many meetings vs. Dresden Saturday, falling behind 10-1 early, then 23-5 in the second quarter before making things interesting for a while.
In the end though, too many turnovers and a plethora of missed shots from in close killed any chances the Purple and Gold had at making a serious run.
“Anybody who plays aggressively against us, we back up instead of answering the challenge,” UC head coach Chuck Reedy said afterward. “We worked for two days at attacking the rim against what they were going to do with their press and then we did none of that in the game.”
Union City trailed 25-10 at the half, but cut that deficit under double figures by scoring the first six points of the third quarter on hoops by Sophie Theobald and Shyon Stephens and two free throws by Kylie McCadney.
A McCadney 3-pointer with under a minute left in the period again got the Lady Tornadoes within nine (30-21).
It would get no closer, though, as Dresden had a 9-2 flurry in the early stages of the fourth stanza and expanded its 11-point lead to 18.
McCadney had a team-best 12 points for UC and was the only player for the Twister girls to score in double figures.
“We’ve got at least one more to go, and we’ll need a much better effort and execution against whomever we play,” Reedy added.
Stephens and Jada Williams were named to the all-district team based on regular season play, while Williams was also chosen for the all-tournament roster.
