Driver Dies After Heart Attack; Citizen Performs CPR

By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Buchanan, Tenn.–A resident rushed to the aid of a Springville man who suffered a heart attack while driving, providing CPR until first responders could arrive Thursday morning.
Sadly, Donald Reed, age 63, of Springville, died at the scene. After suffering the heart attack, Mr. Reed crashed his truck through a privacy fence and into a camper at 11194 Hwy. 40E in Buchanan.
According to the report from the Henry Co. Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene around 11 a.m. and found Mr. Reed’s pickup truck in a field, where it had come to rest against the Gulf Stream Cavalier camper.
Deputies found that neighbor Ronnie Brown was already performing CPR on Mr. Reed. He said Mr. Reed had left his residence around 10:38 a.m. and 10 minutes later at 10:48 a.m., he went outside and found Mr. Reed’s truck just below the driveway and in the field.
Brown said the truck was still in gear, tires spinning and the engine revving. Brown called to his wife to call 911 and he ran to the truck and started CPR until the Henry Co. ambulance arrived on the scene.
County Death Investigator Danny Tucker declared Mr. Reed dead at the scene.
Owner of the camper, Ron Richardson, told deputies the camper was an old FEMA trailer that was already damaged.
