Union City, Tenn.–Leah Beth Faulkner and Libby Wisener are getting a jump on their college educations.
The two Union City High School students have been accepted to the 2019 Tennessee Governor’s Schools, where they’ll take month-long courses this summer in their chosen higher education fields while receiving college credit.
The program attracts students from across the state and provides next-level experiences and high-level learning for those chosen candidates who rank near the top academically of their respective classes.
Those selected for the program are placed in a demanding set of courses for students who are normally high achievers.
Faulkner, a junior, will study in the Governor’s School for Agriculture at UT Martin, while Wisener, a sophomore, will be involved in the GS For the Arts, specializing in Visual Arts and Film Making at Middle Tennessee State University.
Wisener currently sports a 4.0 grade point average at UCHS, while Faulkner has a 3.33 GPA.
Each will spend four weeks studying on campus at UTM and MTSU, respectively, this summer.
Faulkner, the daughter of Dan and Laura Faulkner, plans to study veterinary science in college. She has regularly shown lambs and chickens in fair competitions, both locally and in Ohio, Missouri and Louisville.
“I just thought it was a great opportunity for me to get three hours of college credit and get me off to a good start,” Faulkner said, after detailing the application process that included writing an essay and getting a nomination from a member of the Union City faculty.
She said she was undecided on her college choice, but both UTM and Murray State are possibilities.
Wisener claimed she’s had a keen interest in film making and television for some time and will expand on that knowledge with her time in Murfreesboro at MTSU.
“I love watching television and I want to make it in television – behind the camera,” she stated.
More than 900 applied for her particular program and she was among a class of 30 selected.
Libby is currently undecided on her college choice, but has specific interest in SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in Georgia.
She is the daughter of Brad and Shauna Wisener.
