Paris, Tenn.—Big news from the Henry County Relay for Life: both the date and the venue for the annual fund-raising event are being changed this year.
Relay Chairman Tater Hayes announced Tuesday morning the event will be held Saturday, September 7 in downtown Paris.
The date is moved to the fall this year to avoid the sweltering heat that has been experienced the past few years when the Relay event has been held in June.
The event will be held on the court square in downtown Paris, with the walking track to go around the courthouse this year, Hayes said.
Hayes told WENK/WTPR that Relay officials “are looking to make Relay great again. Participation has gone downhill over the past few years and we want to make it a people event again, a community event again.”
Relay for Life “is all about raising money, yes, but it’s also about sharing your experiences and your stories of battling cancer. Participation has gone down in recent years, but the need for a cure for cancer has not,” Hayes said.
All the details have yet to be ironed out, Hayes said, “but we’ll have the Survivor’s Dinner that same day as Relay for Life this year.”
The participating sponsors will be set up on the court lawn, he said, with a main tent and main stage set up for participants and the public. “We look to make everyone as comfortable as possible and create a friendly environment to bring closeness for everybody,” he said.
The Relay steering committee continues to meet to make plans for the event, with the next meeting set for the first Monday in April.
